When Core Values Become Just Words on a Wall

Chipotle restaurant storefront — illustrating how brands can lose their way when core values become just words

My husband asked me recently why I stopped going to Chipotle.

Good question. I used to love it. Same with Starbucks. But something shifted, and I'm not alone in noticing.

Here's what happens: There's a time when the culture is good, the vision clear, everyone's aligned, customers are happy.

Then, poof. What the heck happened?

New leadership comes in to "fix" things and ends up ruining what made the company great. The value proposition? Gone. The culture? Destroyed.

Employees and customers both feel it.

What Happens When Values Are Just Talk

When core values are just talk and not action, employees notice first. They make a choice: stop working as hard, stop caring as much, or they do the opposite, taking on way more trying to save what's breaking. Either way, burnout happens. Turnover happens.

Most of the good employees leave or get fired. And when they go, the culture goes with them.

Customers notice too. We leave. We tell people, "They used to be great. I used to love them."

    The road back is brutal.

I hope Chipotle and Starbucks turn around to what once made them great, enjoyable, relevant (I keep reading articles saying this is happening). But what about the rest of us running businesses, building our visions and protecting our culture?

    The Solution: Living Your Values

For me, the solution presented itself through EOS® (Entrepreneurial Operating System®). It's fundamentally laser focused on living core values, not just posting them on a website. It's fundamentally laser focused on living core values, not just posting them on a website.

Yes, it's committing to the hard stuff. Not lip service. Yes, it means actual decisions made through the lens of those values. Real accountability. Actual alignment. Day-to-day consistency.

That's how employees buy in. That's how customers stay loyal. They see the core values lived, and they see it in the results.

We can't just say it. We must live it or risk losing so much.
